Our Technical Services Department has received inquiries concerning bypass filtration.  Bypass filtration technology has been available for years and is used by OEM's and after market companies to provide improved filtration.

Filtration is a key component in engine and other lubrication maintenance programs.  The efficient removal of contaminants (both external and internally generated), combined with the best quality lubricants, can extend engine life.   While it is true that oil is generally drained due to contamination levels, bypass filtration is not a substitute for oil changes for the following reasons:

•  -  There are additives which are used up as they function and can be depleted over time.
•  -  There are contaminants produced that are smaller than one micron and cannot be completely removed by filtration.
•  -  Some additives can become attached to contaminants and then be removed via filtration.
•  -  Periodic oil changes insure that the oil's chemistry can provide the protection engines need and also perform the functions necessary for efficient engine operation.

An engine oil is the "lifeblood" of the engine and does more than lubricate.   While being heated from below zero to 200-700 degrees Fahrenheit, an engine oil must be able to perform the following key functions in the engine:

•  -  seal rings and pistons during combustion
•  -   act as a coolant
•  -   act as a dispersion medium to keep contaminants in suspension until they can be removed from the system via draining and filtration
•  -  protect metals against rust and corrosion
•  -  provide boundary lubrication for cams, rings, the valve train, etc.
•  -  act as a hydraulic medium
•  -  resist foaming
•  -  neutralize acid
•  -  control soot
•  -  resist deposit formation

In order for an engine oil to provide the necessary protection for the engine, the engine oil chemistry must be replaced periodically.
