Cold Weather Antifreeze Protection

Regardless of the brand or type of anti-freeze you may be using, the quality of water mixed with anti-freeze plays an important role. When mixing water with concentrated anti-freeze, deionized and distilled water are the best choices. Many people believe that "city" water is high quality, however "city" or treated water contains calcium and magnesium, both of which react with antifreeze inhibitors and may drop out as solids. Also, large amounts of chlorides and sulfates, which are commonly found in treated water, can cause corrosion problems and pitting of metals.

Therefore, for the highest possible performance and protection from your antifreeze, use a distilled or deionized water when a 50/50 mix is necessary.
