The Dyna-Plex 21C Extended Drain and Fully Formulated Antifreezes have recently changed appearance. The antifreezes' new purple color meets the ATA Maintenance Council's (TMC) Recommended Practices (RP) for identifying different types of coolants. The RP has been designated as 351. The Council's RP 351 has defined four types of coolants based upon additive content and glycol base.
Type I Coolants are conventional low silicate antifreeze. These coolants are green and may or may not be charged with a supplemental coolant additive for heavy-duty diesel usage. Type II Coolants are Fully Formulated Ethylene Glycol based antifreeze. These coolants are purple and are diesel ready. Type III Coolants are Fully Formulated Propylene Glycol based antifreeze. They are blue and are diesel ready. The end user should confirm the use of propylene glycol coolants prior to charging their system. Finally, The red Type IV Coolants contain Organic Acid Technology (OAT). Once again, check with the OEM prior to the use of OAT coolants.
The two antifreezes will continue to possess the same additives as in the past and compatibilities will not be an issue. However, when mixing the previous green colored Type II quality coolant with the new purple color, the resulting color could be a unique brownish, which might be reason enough to drain the current colored antifreeze before using the purple antifreeze.
The TMC recommends that the color coding system be utilized at the point of service. A label should be located at the fill point, either on the radiator near the radiator cap or on the surge tank, indicating which color of coolant is needed. Use of this TMC guideline should improve the identification of the required coolant and ensure that the proper coolant is being used.
